How does an off grid system generate power?
Depending on the on-site resources available, generation options include solar PV panels, wind turbines, micro hydro or a combination of these methods. Many off grid systems also have a backup generator.

How does an off grid system work?
The energy generated is stored in a deep cycle battery bank, ready to be used as and when it is needed. Significant advances in technology allow people living in an off grid powered home to go about their day-to-day life without the concern of running out of energy. Solar PV energy is converted to 230vac by a solar inverter, which is consumed by the household loads. Any excess solar energy is taken by the battery inverter to charge the batteries. The energy stored in the batteries is converted to 230vac by the battery inverter for the household loads when there is limited or no solar energy available. The battery inverter controls the backup generator, requesting it to run and support the off grid system when required.

This system is ideal for general and large off grid systems.

 

DC coupled off grid system

Solar PV energy is converted to the required battery voltage by a solar controller and charges the batteries. The energy stored in the batteries is converted to 230vac by the battery inverter for the household loads. The battery inverter also controls the backup generator, requesting it to run and support the off grid system as required.

This system is ideal for smaller off grid systems such as bach’s and Tiny Homes.
